Project Overview
:
This project is a motion-based type specimen that explores and visually interprets the expressive characteristics of the typeface Cofo Raffine through dynamic composition and animation.

Project Details
This project is a type specimen video exploring Cofo Raffine by Contrast Foundry, a distinctive serif typeface defined by its elegance, contrast, and unconventional structural rhythm.
The goal was to highlight the character of the typeface through motion while translating its formal qualities into a video that reflects its personality and intended use.
The research phase focused on understanding the typeface’s construction and unique characteristics. Cofo Raffine presents a striking contrast between elegance and unpredictability, with exaggerated ascenders and descenders that extend beyond conventional typographic boundaries. Many letterforms surpass the x-height, creating a dynamic vertical rhythm that contributes to its distinctive presence.
Further analysis revealed a deliberate tension between rigid geometry and expressive curvature. Sharp, controlled strokes are paired with tapered, ornamental finials, creating a refined yet dramatic visual identity. This contrast is amplified by highly varied line weights, which add depth, tension, and theatricality to the letterforms. One notable challenge observed during research is its reduced legibility at smaller scales, reinforcing its suitability for display use rather than body text.

This research directly informed the motion and design approach for the specimen. The pacing, transitions, and composition were designed to reflect the font’s structural contrast and elegance, emphasizing its elongated forms, sharp detailing, and expressive rhythm. The final piece aims to translate the typeface’s personality into motion, highlighting its strengths!
